Concrete Side Yards in Lake Forest
We pour side yards that drain away from your home, give bins and wheelbarrows a firm path, and end the weeds along the fence. The space is tight, so we plan every step around your stucco, utilities and plantings before any concrete arrives.

A narrow space that does a lot of work
The side yard is where trash bins live, where the air conditioner sits, and where you carry tools between the garage and the back. Left as dirt or loose gravel, it turns to mud in winter rain, sprouts weeds by spring and slowly washes soil toward the house.
A concrete side yard fixes the footing and the water at the same time. We set the grade so runoff moves away from the foundation and toward a drain or the street, and we keep the surface below the stucco weep screed so your walls can still breathe and shed moisture.
Because these strips are often only a few feet wide, the work is mostly hand work. That is where care for your home matters most: the block wall, the fence, the gas meter and the planter bed are all within arm's reach of the pour.
What the work includes
- Layout and drainage plan
- We measure the run, check where water goes today and mark a slope that carries it away from the house. Where the yard is long or boxed in by a wall, we may suggest a channel drain or a tie-in to an existing drain line.
- Excavation and base
- We dig out soil, roots and old gravel to the right depth, then place and compact a base. Much of the ground in this part of Orange County is clay that swells when wet, so a well-compacted base keeps the slab from moving with the seasons.
- Reinforcement and control joints
- We add reinforcement suited to the use, and we cut or tool joints at close spacing. In a narrow slab, frequent joints guide shrinkage cracks into straight, tidy lines instead of random ones.
- Working around utilities
- Gas meters, hose bibs, AC pads and cleanouts get clean forms and neat edges around them. Nothing gets buried that you or a utility crew will need to reach later.
- Finish that suits the space
- Most side yards get a light broom finish for grip in wet weather. If the side yard connects to a patio or a stamped concrete area, we can match the color or texture so the path reads as one design.
- Protection and cleanup
- We cover stucco, windows and plant beds before we pour, and wash down walls and hardscape when we finish. Excess material and spoils leave with us.
Signs your side yard is ready for concrete
Water pools against the wall
If puddles sit along the house after a storm, the soil is sloped the wrong way. That moisture can stain stucco and find its way toward the foundation.
Bins are a struggle to move
Wheels sink into dirt or snag on gravel every trash day. A smooth, firm surface makes the trip easy.
Weeds keep coming back
Pulling and spraying the same strip every few weeks is a sign the ground needs a permanent cover.
Gravel is migrating
Loose rock drifts into the lawn, the driveway and the garage. Concrete stays where it is put.
Mud tracks into the house
If the side yard is a regular route for kids, pets or gardening, mud on your floors tells you it needs a real path.
What shapes the price of a side yard
Side yards are smaller than most flatwork, but access is harder, so the price depends more on the site than on square footage alone. We explain each line of the estimate before you decide.
Access to the yard
A short run near the driveway is quicker than a long one behind a gate or wall, where every load travels by hand or needs a pump.
Removal and soil condition
Old gravel, roots or debris add excavation and hauling. Soft or expansive clay may call for more base material.
Drainage work
Channel drains, area drains or a connection to an existing line add materials and labor, and they are often worth it in a boxed-in side yard.
Finish and color
A broom finish is the simplest. Integral color or a pattern to match a nearby patio adds time and material.
How a side yard job runs
- 1
Walkthrough and estimate
We look at the space with you, note utilities, plants you want kept and how water moves, and give you a written estimate with each part of the job listed. If you live in an HOA community, we can talk through what the association usually asks to see.
- 2
Prep day
We protect walls, windows and beds, dig out the strip and set forms. We let you know when the gate needs to stay open and where we will stage tools so your household can plan around us.
- 3
Pour and finish
Concrete comes in by wheelbarrow or a small pump line, depending on how far the yard runs from the street. We place, screed, finish and joint the slab the same day.
- 4
Cure and handover
Once the forms come off and the area is cleaned, we walk the new side yard with you. Walking on it is usually fine after a day or two, and before we leave we give you a date for rolling the trash bins back and setting anything heavy on the slab.

Side yard questions
How wide does my side yard need to be for concrete?
There is no real minimum. We regularly work in strips only a few feet wide between the house and a fence or block wall. Narrow spaces simply mean more hand work and careful forming.
Will the concrete cause water problems against my house?
It should do the opposite. We slope the slab away from the foundation and keep it below the stucco weep screed. If water has nowhere to go, we will recommend a drain rather than leave it to pool.
What happens to the air conditioner and gas meter in my side yard?
They stay where they are and stay reachable. Our forms follow the outline of each meter, AC pad and cleanout, so the new slab finishes cleanly around them. If we notice the AC pad is cracked or sitting low, we will mention it so you can raise it with your HVAC contractor.
Does someone have to stay at the house while you work?
Only for parts of the job. What we really need is an unlocked gate and a hose bib we can use. Before pour day we confirm the timing with you, so pets can be kept indoors and the side door stays shut while the concrete goes in.
Can the side yard match my driveway or patio?
Often, yes. We can carry the finish from your driveway, a patio or a walkway through the side yard, or step down to a simpler broom finish where the space is purely practical.
